Dam! Ice and Snow...

Saw this nasty looking icicle out of my office window today and thought it was a good reminder about ice dams and snow on your roofs. Some people say icicles are pretty but to an insurance agent they are hideous. If you have excess icicles hanging from your roof then you have a problem that needs to be taken care of asap. Lack of insulation in your attic can cause the snow on your roof to melt and when that water reaches the cold eave it freezes again. Eventually the water can back up and leak through your shingles into the interior of your house.

Don’t wait for that to happen. Rake the snow from the bottom few feet of your roof and if there is an ice dam find a way to make a channel in it for water to flow down. Heat tape, warm water, or even a nylon filled with calcium chloride are good ways to create that channel.

Also, your house can handle quite a bit of weight from snow but your shed or garage weren’t built the same way so rake or shovel as much snow as you can. And make sure that snow isn’t covering up exhaust vents from your furnace, water heater, or dryer.

Thanks for taking care of your property so you can help avoid the hassle and cost of an insurance claim for something that is easy to prevent.
